Compassion Fatigue: The Real Cost of Caring

Has your fuse shortened? Has your management team lost its luster? Do you long for the pre-pandemic workplace culture where focus seemed easy and goals clearly attainable?
With the arrival of Covid-19, workplace stress has skyrocketed with compassion fatigue and burnout impacting the workplace around the globe. Compassion fatigue, often mistaken for burnout, is the result of physical, emotional, and psychological impact of helping others experiencing stress or trauma. These conditions lead to reduced productivity and increased turnover. The number one way to help retain employees and keep them engaged is to adopt an overall strategy to support mental health in the workplace.
Professionals regardless of disciplines, settings, and experience levels are impacted by compassion fatigue and burnout. This is especially true for essential workers on the frontline including HR If these conditions go unresolved, they threaten individuals' physical and mental health, negatively disrupt work teams and organizations, and yield consequences that impact patient safety and satisfaction. Because we care about others and want to do all we can in their best interests, this relationship can often contribute to our emotional distress, including burnout and compassion fatigue.
