Compassion Fatigue and Burnout: The Real Cost of Caring
Jackie Scarborough, PhD, LPC, Bost, Inc., Fort Smith, AR

If these conditions go unresolved, they threaten individuals' physical and mental health, negatively disrupt work teams and organizations, and yield consequences that impact patient safety and satisfaction. Because we care about others and want to do all we can in their best interests, this relationship can often contribute to our emotional distress, including burnout and compassion fatigue.
